Odessa is a city in southern Ukraine. It is the administrative center of the Odessa region and the main naval base of the Ukrainian naval forces. Located on the shore of the Odessa Bay in the Black Sea. A great scientific and educational center. City of Heroes.

It is the third most populous city in the country. As of January 1, 2018, the city population was 993,831 permanent residents and 1,011,494 people from the current population. Over 1.2 million people live in the agglomeration.

The historical center is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The ensemble of Primorsky Boulevard, Duc de Richelieu Square and Potemkin Stairs.

The first mention of the city dates from January 10, 21, 1795.

The official twinning agreement was signed on 23 December 1994 in Chisinau, Republic of Moldova, by Mr. Serafim Urechean, General Mayor of Chisinau Municipality and Mr. Anatol Vorohaev, Mayor of Odessa City.

The first visits to initiate the collaboration were undertaken in early 1994.

During these years there were working visits regarding the exchange of experience in different fields, the participation of the artistic collectives from both cities in various festivals with cultural tint. Constantly, during periods of collaboration, there were meetings of official delegations in the city of Odessa and Chisinau for discussions on the continuity of the collaboration through various projects of common interest.

Over the years the tradition of addressing each other and delegating representatives of the cities to participate in the holidays dedicated to the Days of the cities of Odessa and Chisinau has been preserved.

Chisinau City Hall, together with the city of Odessa, applied for a call for project proposals launched by the European Commission. Thus, Chisinau and Odessa obtained funding from the European Union within the Program "Non-state actors and local authorities in development" for the implementation of the project "Pluvial sewerage. Promoting and implementing innovative climate change actions "(2019 - 2011), total budget of 900 thousand Euro. The purpose of the joint project is to promote and implement innovative logistics operations and constructive adaptation to climate change in Chisinau and Odessa; reducing the effects of heavy rains and floods by improving rainwater collection and evacuation systems and their orientation in natural basins.

There are also international competitions, cultural festivals for children and young people in the city of Odessa where participants from Chisinau are always present and winners.

A street in the center of Chisinau is named after the sister city of Odessa.
