Ion Ceban, the General Mayor, participated today in the public presentation of the Strategy draft for the development of alternative transport infrastructure in Chisinau

The Mayor himself uses different kinds of sports, including cycling or scooter, despite the busy schedule of work. Thus, it will support the development of conditions for traveling around the city with alternative transport.

 "Let's use this type of transport more and more, even now, during the pandemic period, so that together we can contribute to maximize on opportunities to ensure a minimum of comfort in this regard.”I am very pleased to have an adjusted vision. Maybe the strategy is good. Next, we must act step by step to make the plans a reality ", said Ion Ceban.

The Strategy draft for the development of alternative transport infrastructure in Chisinau, aims for sustainable development of the municipality, by improving urban mobility, ecological situation and population’s health by integrating bicycles and other alternative transport in the general system of urban transport infrastructure, as a type of transport with full rights.

The increase in the number of citizens who prefer to travel around the city with alternative transport has led to the need to create a well-developed and comfortable infrastructure in a short time.

The project preparation process was public and involved: active citizens, cyclists and future users of the infrastructure.

The main results expected after the implementation of the Strategy for the development of alternative transport infrastructure in Chisinau by 2026 are:

1.      Developing a network of routes for alternative transport, with a total length of 200 km, which will connect all sectors of the city of Chisinau;

2.      Changing the attitude of the inhabitants towards alternative transport;

3.      Increasing the share of alternative transport in relation to the total share of daily movements of all types of transport up to 1%;

4.      Increasing the number of bicycle parking lots near public institutions, educational institutions and leisure centers.

The draft strategy was developed by the public association ECOPRO in partnership with UNDP Moldova, Green City Lab and Automobil Club of Moldova.
