On 16 December 2020, the Chisinau City Hall and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) signed an agreement to finance the modernization of the capital's waste management system, worth of €9 million.
The event is enlisted in the list of activities, aimed for implementing the "The solid waste Chisinau" project, for which the municipality has negotiated, with development partners (EBRD, EIB), in order to obtaining financial sources for development.
The general financing project plan provides for: EBRD loan – €9 million; EIB loan – €9 million, which is to come to the City Hall as a non-refundable loan through the Ministry of Agriculture and Regional Development, as an integral part of the waste management project for the country; the Eastern Europe Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership (E5P) Fund is extending a €5 million investment grant, which is supported by the European Union, the largest donor, as well as the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Lithuania, Moldova, Norway, Poland, Romania, the Slovak Republic and Sweden, the fund’s initiator and largest bilateral donor. Also, the municipality's contribution to support the project is €7,96 million.
Ion Ceban, General Mayor of Chisinau, said: “The solid waste Chisinau” project is it of a vital importance to the capital, so the modernization of the waste collection, transportation and waste disposal service is imminent.
“Chisinau needs an urgent response to the growing problem of solid waste, and the implementation of the solid waste project in the city will significantly reduce harmful effects on the environment, climate and human health. In the context, I thank the external partners for their contribution to the achievement of the most important investment projects carried out by the municipality," said the Mayor.
The grant and the fund loans which will be used to the implementation of the “Solid waste Chisinau Project” consist in:
- Development of the M.E. "Autosalubritate" by renewing the fleet of self-special vehicles park with new units and waste selection mechanisms;
- Rehabilitation of the existing waste land in Tantareni commune;
- Revitalizing the alternative access route to the landfill;
- Closing the landfill from Uzinelor 211 street ;
- Renovation of the waste transfer station;
- Investment in a waste sorting facility.
