Yerevan is the capital of Armenia. The city has a population estimated at 1,111,300 inhabitants in 2009. It is located in the central-western part of the country, in an intramontaneous depression.

It is the largest city in Armenia, as well as one of the oldest cities in the world inhabited continuously. Located along the Hrazdan River, Yerevan is the administrative, cultural and industrial center of the country. It is the capital of Armenia from 1918. The city also serves as the headquarters of the Pontifical Archdiocesan Araratienecea the largest diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church and one of the oldest dioceses in the world.

The history of Yerevan dates from the 8th century BC, with the founding of the fortress of Erebuni in 782 BC. by King Argisti I in the extreme west of the Ararat Plain. Erebuni was "designed as a great administrative and religious center, a complete royal capital."

With the development of Armenia's economy, Yerevan underwent a major transformation. In 2011, the population of Yerevan was 1,060,138 listeners, ie over 35% of the total population of the Republic of Armenia. According to the official estimate for 2016, the current population of the city is 1,073,700. Yerevan was named in 2012 the World Book Capital by UNESCO. Yerevan is also a member of Eurocities.

The twinning agreement between Yerevan and Chisinau was signed on March 24, 2000, in Chisinau, Republic of Moldova by Mr. Serafim Urechean, General Mayor of Chisinau and Mr. Vardap Vardapetean, Deputy Mayor of Yerevan.

Over the years, the importance, extension and development of cooperation in joint projects, stimulation of cultural exchange and continuity of the partnership between Yerevan and Chisinau were discussed.

According to the parties, the cooperation within the Eastern Partnership and the various international projects is also a good opportunity to develop relations between the two cities.

Both Yerevan and Chisinau contribute to the implementation of programs in different areas of urban management, which in turn will strengthen and intensify the cooperation between the two cities. There are great opportunities and prospects for cooperation in various areas of the urban economy, as well as in the sharing of management experience.

At the beginning of 2019, Chisinau City Hall being the Lead Partner and having as partners of the project the cities of Yerevan and Buzau, ensured the writing and application of the project "Business through tourism - the cross-border initiative in the tourism sector of Chisinau, Buzău and Yerevan", in within the framework of the 2-nd Call for project proposals of the ENI CBC Joint Operational Program BLACK SEA BASIN 2014-2020.

Throughout the collaboration period, reciprocal letters of invitation to various events and letters of congratulation on various occasions were addressed.
