Chisinau is part of the global UNESCO network of learning cities


Chisinau, along with 54 cities from 27 countries of the world, have today become part of the UNESCO Global Network "Learning Cities". Representatives of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization have made it clear that selected cities are outstanding examples in which lifelong learning can become a reality at the local level.

UNESCO's global network of learning cities promotes political dialogue, peer learning and collaboration between member cities. Thus, Chisinau will have access to global projects aimed at lifelong learning.

During the online event, the General Mayor of Chisinau noted the important aspects of the title obtained and thanked David Atchoarena the Director of the UNESCO Institute for the opportunity to participate in this important meeting for Chisinau and the citizens of the capital.

"Lifelong learning is a necessity and we want to become an example city. Moreover, this concept can also contribute to the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, which focuses on ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education by promoting continuous learning opportunities for all, but also by creating inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable public spaces," Ion Ceban said.

UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC) is an international policy-oriented network that provides inspiration, knowledge and best practices. MEMBERS OF THE UNESCO LNGC benefit from the sharing of lifelong learning policies and practices, the production and exchange of knowledge on key challenges and solutions, capacity-building and training initiatives, and participation in global events, such as the International Conference of 'Learning Cities'.

Based on the UNESCO LNGC strategy for 2019-2021, the network's more than 170 members focus their joint activities on seven key groups: education for sustainable development; equity and inclusion; educational planning, monitoring and evaluation; education for global citizenship; entrepreneurship; health and well-being; literacy.
